Explications
Minnesota Trade:

Leafs get the big, right handed defenseman who is still in his prime and signed for 4 more years. While important to Minnesota, they realize they can't compete in the central as they are currently structured and opt for a big haul to kick start a retool of sorts. Minnesota gets a speedy winger with upside, if he can get his puck control skills together, could be a 60pt player. They also get Ceci, either to play on a tanking team, or flip for more assets. Than they get a former 1st round pick in Liljegren, who is only 20, and 2 2nd round picks. The 2021 draft pick is conditional, in that if the Leafs win the Cup in either the next 2 years, it becomes a 1st.

New York Trade:

Leafs get a young backup who could play 30 games this year. NYR move on once their prospect Shesterkin is ready to join Lundqvist in the NHL. Rangers get NY native, and top prospect in Bracco, a replacement AHL goalie, and a 3rd round pick. Leafs could make Georgiev the Andersen replacement in a couple years if they feel he is ready.

You can't trade your scraps to get a guy like Dumba, future norris caliber top 2 rhd. If you a receiving value you need to be giving up value. It would take something far more significant either as a 1 for 1 or a larger package that starts with Nylander and Sandin.

I'm a Leafs fan but let me ask you a simple question:

Who is the most valuable player currently on Minnesota?

The above is not enough but a package starting with Nylander and Sandin is too much

This. Quality not quantity for a player like him.

Not even, top pair D who excel at both ends are not easy to come by. It would at least cost you Nylander (a streaky scoring winger with defensive deficiencies) and Sandin who is full of potential but wildly unproven to get an established top pair right handed dman

Nylander doesn't have defensive deficiencies. He also can play both c and w.

Getting Spurgeon as a rental would've been a good option if the Wild didn't give him that nonsense contract. Dumba is pretty much out of the question.

Nylander may be one of the worst defensive forwards in the entire league he is a liability without the puck

The people who say William Nylander can play center are the same people that said Jonathan Drouin could, and look how that turned out.

Except he can instead of Jonathan Drouin. Nylander is defensively responsible and versatille and nobody is giving him credit for it..

You don't need an avalanche of facts, if you can honestly sit there and say that William Nylander is a responsible two way center you should deactivate your account. He doesn't kill penalties, he's not on the ice in crucial defensive situations of the game to preserve a lead, the vast majority of his lines starts are in the offensive zone, and if he was such a good two way center they wouldn't have gone out of their way to load up at that position and hide him on the wing.

I mean.. he is playing center in a way. He shares dot with Matthews and is winning majority of draws, last season his FO% in more than expected number of draws in defensive zone was 57+% which is great. He is stealing pucks a lot, creating turnovers with his forecheck and battling along the boards mostly winning those battles with larger opponents. He is responsible and he can play center. He is primarely winger but he can switch to center at any time and do a very good or even great job (and he did always that). He is great and responsible versatille center/winger.. and if you cant see that, I have no help for you.

Eh, not really. Most of people that have hockey as their main source of income will agree with me.. you are making him to be Phil Kessel bad defensively and he is good in that department too. Just watch the ****ing games.

You should call hockeydb and eliteprospects they are lying to you, how dare they classify william as a right winger

I am not sure how that is a response to my comment. Did Drouin play C in the q? Did Nylander play C in the AHL and SHL and even for the leafs before we drafted Matthews?

As I know the answer your comparison is sillu

Let's be honest...Nylander is not the worst defensively in the league. He's nothing special, I'd say slightly below average defensively but surely not considered a 2 way forward by any means.

While I also don't think Nylander is the most viable defensive centre, going "nuh-uh!" to all of Sammy's posts isn't really making your case.

In his first two season's he was top 25 in the offensive zone, way above average defensively in the neutral zone but a little below average in his own zone. So far this year that hasn't been the case, he's been super engaged in all zones and has looked like the player many expect him to be. Which is an extremely good player. He's going to have a very big year. I'd wager.

I think his numbers show him to be better than the eye test suggests.

That leads to both doubting the numbers and me wondering if he's the new style two way forward where his "defensive" quality is more that he is just good at getting the puck up the ice than being good at breaking plays in the defensive zone, or other traditional defensive skills.

I suspect it's a bit of everything.

He certainly isn't Bergeron or Kopitar but i suspect he's actually above average defensively because he's so good at pushing the puck down the ice. Thus if you mix him with someone more traditional in their defensive game AND he matures in his defe dive game as he ages, he can actually be quite a good two way player.

There's a lot more to it then pushing pucks up the ice. Defensive forwards play the forecheck as well as strip pucks in the neutral and defensive zones. What are his takeaways in each zone, that is a far more telling stat.
