Was this a good signing?

Great contract! Thought point would put up more of a fight but then again why would you?

In most cases money is the most important thing but it gets real hard to think too much about money when you have great weather, low taxes, a team of guys all willing to take less to be competitive and an all star talented team that makes everyone look better as a result.

Its pretty much the same in the "real" world. If I had a job I loved going to where I had fun almost everyday and life there was generally pretty good all round, I wouldn't be thinking about money as much.

Honestly ... I'm a Leaf fan ... and there's zero chance Point end's up with Marner type money over the next 6 years:

Mitch Marner

6 Year AAV = $10,890,000

Brayden Point

Year 1 (Contract 1) = $6,750,000
Year 2 (Contract 1) = $6,750,000
Year 3 (Contract 1) = $6,750,000
Year 4 (Contract 2) = $15,030,000
Year 5 (Contract 2) = $15,030,000
Year 6 (Contract 2) = $15,030,000

6 Year AAV = $10,890,000

If Tampa can keep Point's next cap-hit under $15,030,000 and his term over 2 years ... they'll come out laughing.

And if I had to guess ... I'd guess that Point's next contract will look very similar to Marner's current contract.

I disagree with that. The income tax calculator (which does factor in jock tax) shows Point paying ~39.13% in taxes since there's no state income tax, so $3.195M this year, $3.625M next year, $5.331M in the last year for a total of $12.151 over these 3 years after taxes but before agent fees and escrow.
Marner gets $7.464M, $6.999M, $4.842M, $3.746Mx3 for $30.543M. That's an extra $18.392M over 3 years or $6.131M per year. The salary cap should be significantly higher by then. He surpasses Marner's earnings if he gets $10.2Mx3 ($4.8M salary, 5.4M bonus) over that 3 year period. Again, everything is using the capfriendly tax estimate tool and assuming 0 escrow and 0 agent fees for both guys.

Edit: I'm not saying it will definitely happen, but saying there's 0 chance he ends up with Marner type money to me seems inaccurate. Even if he gets exactly his 9Mx3 with no bonuses (important for jock tax since there's no income tax in Tampa) he'd only wind up $2.4M shy in post-tax, pre-escrow/fees income which is 92.14% of Marner's earnings, which I would consider to be 'Marner type money.'

The 3 people that voted no are Leaf fans who are coming to realize that other GM's didn't take Dubas' deal of overpaying RFA's and now have their tale between their legs.

If income taxes were as simple as clicking one button ... than no one would need accountants.

I'm not going to go into detail (long explanation) ... but the difference in their final tax rate won't be nearly as much as a tax calculator implies.

Did you factor in the (massive) difference in endorsement opportunities between the cities? (Is Point's face on any Red Bull cans? Or insurance billboards?)

PS: Matthews and Tavares final income tax rates are almost identical to anyone on Tampa Bay (Marner isn't quite as lucky though).

Point should fire his agent. That's all I'm saying. He's probably on the TB payroll.

That's Brayden Point telling all the hockey world that he wants to win a cup with the lightning.
Tkachuk what are you waiting for now?! You wanna be the last as****le to sign, right? That's just who u are...

What makes you think this deal was/is on the table for Tkachuk? Like I said, this is the richest 3 year bridge deal in league history. And it's in a state w/ no state income tax on a team where the MVP of the league makes only $9.5M on an 8 year deal! Point is arguably the 5th most valuable player on the team. This contract is fine, but it's not a steal. You have to acknowledge that the dollar amount is relative to other factors, particularly term. This deal is NOT a comparable to Matthews, Marner, etc...Point would've gotten much, much more money on a 5 or 6 year contract.

Why doesn't anyone realize that the Marner deal is NOT a comp for Point's deal. 3 years vs. 6 years. No state tax for Point. Why do you think McAvoy signed for less than $5M AAV? Shorter term deals are always gonna carry a smaller cap hit!!! It's called a "bridge deal" for a reason.

True. However if you consider the Cap % on signing this is less than those two examples by a considerable amount.

Yes but if we are going to consider cap % on signing then we have to consider points being a bridge deal versus the other two being long term. So either way you look at it, value of just the deals signed from today until the end, or based on value at the time of signing, I think MacKinnon and Pastranak deals are better.

That doesn't mean Points is bad, just that I think those deals are a little better based on the players and term remaining.

Thought they'd had "almost no discussions"!
Not shocked he took a discount, this deal makes me very happy as a Jets fan though. This has to set a bar for any bridge Laine or Connor might sign now.

It's not a bad contract whatsoever, but I am interested in seeing how they fit other players into the mix next year including Tyler Johnson, and Sergachev.

Well I think "hate" is a strong word. I don't hate winter, taxes, etc but I do like warm weather and less taxes a lot more. wink
