How is it an overpay? He's great defensively and can put up 50/60 points a year. He's also a franchise player.

Rather not mess around with Dunn, just get him signed as long as possible if it means not signing a UFA like Toffoli - I think Fabbri, Kostin and/or Kyrou will be NHLers and will take top-9 spots.

That's about as high as I'd go on a Schenn deal - not sure it gets it done though, he'll probably get a lot of attention. My guess is Petro is extended this winter (6 x $9m) and Schenn walks this summer.

Seems like " franchise player " meaning has obviously changed over the years...

45-50 pts player and like you said " great defensively " doesn't mean you're worth $10M

$8,5M is okay.

I mean based on the way contracts are going, this may even be considered slightly below market......

The last 6 big contracts for players UFA age or older...
Spurgeon: 7.5M (2019)
Karlsson: 11.5M (2019)
Doughty: 11M (2018)
OEL: 8.25M (2018)
Carlson: 8M (2018)
Vlasic: 7M (2017)

Easiest comp is John Carlson. Signed for 10% of the cap last summer, but for 8 years (til he's 36). I think Petro will want the 7-8 yr term - which would suck for the team - and the only way for the Blues to reduce the term to 6 yrs (my comfort threshold) is to raise the AAV. I think 8.5-9m AAV gets it done. Shouldn't be an extremely tough negotiation; he's married to a girl from here and they just had triplets.

I'd say that's an under pay. You don't offer a really good defenseman like him 500k more than Chabot... 9-10.5m is what he'll get. I bet on it.

I don't know if signing him for another 8 years is very wise especially at 9-10.5m(the range I'm guessing he'll get) he is 29 now. I would imagine 6 years max, but it all depends on what the player wants and what the team is willing to get.

I could see Schenn seeking the Duchene deal 8M. Don't know if he'll get that from the Blues, but I know he will via UFA.

Based on the players above, Is Carlson making what he deserves? I didn't think so. I think he took below market value to stay in Washington. Jared Spurgeon is making half a mil less than Carlson only a year after. OEL signed for more than Carlson despite way less accolades, Doughty and Karlsson's contracts brought everyone whose in the same echelon, cap up by default. Throw in inflation and I don't see how anyone can argue 8.5 or 9 at this point. Not too mention that the cup win and the fact that he's a captain bring huge bonus to his negotiation if he chose to test free agency.

If you sign Pietrangelo next year. Its easily 10M *on the open market. If he wants to take a discount, that's his prerogative, just like Carlson did but simply using market data, inflation and accolades, anything under 10M is him choosing to, not the market dictating it.

I've been saying for a while that I don't think Schenn will be with us a year from now.
