I mean, at the NHL, it might be nothing. but these organizations do have farm teams to run. they have GMs of these AHL farm teams that have to improve their teams, just like the GMs of NHL teams. just because CapFriendly doesn't really cover what happens in the AHL doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

I guess fair deal? Quick breeze through stats shows they're both 30-40 pt. AHL players that were picked in 3rd/4th rounds in 2012 and 2014 and neither have made any significant NHL impact. Seems like a solid 1 for 1

Good minor trade. SJ get a veteran D; can be called up for depth. CAR get a RD, which they need, with small upside.

That and the teams probably see some NHL potential in the player who the other team doesn't.

I watched Wood a lot when he was with Tucson, and then a little bit when he was with the Barracuda. He’s nothing special. No real NHL upside to his game. Win for the Sharks in getting something better in exchange

Owner says to his GM. "What have you done lately? I'm not paying you just to sit around and gab on the phone to you other GM friends." So the GMs have this planned out, they make trades to show the owner they are doing something. These two players look like minor leaguers, but Carrick at the AHL makes 120,000 more than Wood. So at least the Carolina owner is happy.

man, we really need to get off this "the Hurricanes are cheap and concerned about actual salary" train. Tom Dundon lit a bunch of money on fire investing in the AAF, and he laughed in the face of everyone that thought he would have actual difficulty matching the Aho offer sheet.

Yea, some how the Canes are virtually at the top of the cap...Yes I know they have dead money in Semin and Marleau but still they trying to be competitive. A Conference Final shows they are competitive.
That Aho signing...what a gift from the Habs. I still don't understand why Aho signed the offer sheet, but financial security must have been important. The minor league trade, as you suggest, done for a hockey reason not a financial reason.

Kyle Wood played better than Carrick did, I would say Carolina slightly wins this deal.

I thought of reporting you to Mr Banks, maybe with my "influence" I could get you suspended for a month, so I could lengthen the lead. It's card night, I'll be away for some of the evening, so maybe the cap closes tonight. Without these silly Marner scenario, I might have had 300 fewer posts.
