Reaves to PIT never happens

Explications
GMJR’s string of mistakes began at the 2017 NHL Draft where he traded Oskar Sundqvist and Pittsburgh’s first round pick that night for Ryan Reaves. This trade never occurring creates a huge chain reaction throughout the organization.

Oskar Sundqvist would open the 2017-2018 season as the team’s third line center and have an immediate impact causing the Derick Brassard Trade to never happen. Without the Brassard Trade that allows the team to use their 2018 first and Filip Gustavsson as trade assets in the 2018 offseason and beyond.

2018 offseason:
Trade: Conor Sheary and a first round pick (2018) to Arizona for Max Domi
Pittsburgh signs John Moore instead of Jack Johnson

2018-2019 season:
Trade: Daniel Sprong to Anaheim for Marcus Pettersson

2019 offseason:
Trade: Olli Maatta to Chicago for Dominik Kahun
Trade: Phil Kessel to Arizona for Lawson Crouse, PO Joseph, and a 2nd round pick
Trade: Filip Gustavsson to Vegas for Colin Miller
Pittsburgh signs Micheal Ferland instead of Brandon Tanev

To be fair, Sundqvist was absolutely awful in 2017-18. Most of us Blues fans had him as an afterthought coming into this year and he likely was getting waived if Wilson didn’t almost take his head off.

That’s probably true but this team is more or less keying in on if PIT never abandoned the speed and skill. I always liked sundqvist and never thought he got a fair shot with the team.

Yeah the Reaves deal might have been the most obviously dumb trade from the start that I’ve seen. It was bad even without Sundqvist magically becoming a beast.

I like everything you said except the kessel Trade. I think we could do better than Crouse. Probably Dvorak

That’s very true...could just get Dvorak and never sign Ferland.

This is very true. I think people are over valuing OS right now. I wouldn't expect his having a great year next year.
He might have had a career year this year and cashed in. Good for him. Probably bad for the blues.

I think it would be pretty weird if he has just one random good season and then just dips but I suppose it could happen. He led all forwards in ice-time in a cup final game and is a defensive stud similar to an Adam Lowry or Radek Faksa. Usually I’d scoff at giving term to depth, but I’m convinced Sundqvist is #actuallygood. I worry the Blues value Barbashev the same as Sundqvist and give him a similar contract. He’s the real bet to regress with his almost league leading shooting %.

I can’t get this to edit for some reason but as per mhockey91’s suggestion Pittsburgh would trade Phil Kessel to Arizona for Christian Dvorak and PO Joseph. With Dvorak there would be no need for Micheal Ferland. For sake of accuracy I’d add Josh Archibald to the fourth line thus making the forward group consist of:

Guentzel-Crosby-Simon
Domi-Malkin-Hornqvist
Dvorak-Sundqvist-Kahun
ZAR-Blueger-Archibald

Arizona takes Galchenyuk instead. Gustavsson is not the same value as a 2nd rounder so Miller still goes to Buffalo

Sheary for Domi was apparently moments away from happening until MTL countered with Galchenyuk. I honestly believe at the time that ARZ would have taken Sheary and a first over Galchenyuk.

But they clearly didnt, it was moments away from actually happening and they chose Galchenyuk. The first wouldnt have swayed them, its annually 20+. Galchenyuk is still more valuable than Sheary and a possible future middle 6 forward
