Where are all those people who said Dubas is a bad GM? I'd love to hear their takes on this one

I hope he doesn't sign and Dubas flips him for a pick.

He has a QO for 4.3m, from what I have heard the leafs are tied to that and he can accept that at any time.

Still gonna be a tough one. Ceci getting $4,5M, Kerfoot $3-3,5M via arbitration. That's below $9M left for Marner so some moves will be made.

Quoting: palhal
Not quite. 5.3m cap relief because of Horton LTIR, so it's 16.3m

CapFriendly is showing 11,065301 cap room + Horton on LTIR 5,300,000 = 16,365,301 room with a 22 man roster. If we sign Marner, Kerfoot and Ceci that makes 25 on the roster so delete two minimum players at 700,000 so that will give 17,765,301 to sign the 3 players.

Ceci was qualified at 4.3 so he could accept that right now and leafs would have to accept it. If he elects arbitration leafs could not accept a higher number and let him walk and he becomes a UFA. But lets say he signs for the 4.5 for 1 year as was reported. That will leave 13,265,301 left for Kerfoot and Marner. If Kerfoot comes in at 3.25 then that leaves 10mil for Marner.

Marner Deal will be interesting. Minimum has to be $10M+

Unfortunately this seems like a great way to patch a D together for a year but Anderson will need to stand on his head. Should be fun to see how they push the offense because IDK if defense will come first with that blue line

Well it always was going to be patch D in 2019/20. But with Aho's contract, why is Marner a minimum 10m? Maybe the UFA bar has been set lower. Yes, I agree the Leafs will pay over 10m, but the point is maybe they don't HAVE too.

Oh no. Whatever will they do?!?!?
I do find it funny that we only have 1 (currently) NHL dman signed past this year though

I was just going to make that point. Idk how major of an issue that is but seems a little concerning

I’m not sure if Barrie is the right fit either but when you get a deal like that with keerfoot... oh boy, you don’t turn that down.

Barrie is a 1 year thing.

Dubas makes a damn steal.

This would've been a fair deal in my opinion had the Avs not retained half of Barrie's salary. COL desperately needed depth at Center and Kadri provides an excellent 2-way presence.

I think the leafs should just stop making moves now. They are good. Maybe a play for a cheap goalie with potential like comrie but no more.

Resign ceci 1x4.5. That leaves 11.8 million to resign marner and kerfoot. If aho got 8.45x5, market gets marner 9.5x6 at most. Use the rest to sign kerfoot for 3C or a top 6 role until hyman gets back

Love the move

Kerfoot will probably ask for 4M-ish.

You're 100% right! Why would they need to pay over $10M unless there's a QO? Do you really think any team will offer up four 1st rounders AND over $10.5M? That'd never happen. Aho is probably as good as Marner and if not, he's very close. Leafs have no reason to overpay Marner just to prove the media/fans right.

I’ve been an absolute junkie for this site for years. Read a lot of things that got on my nerves. Like ridiculous armchair GM rosters with awful trades and terrible signings, where someone way under or over paid someone etc... But I was always too lazy to create an account or bother saying anything. Well I just created the account. For this lol. I’m really shocked to see everyone bashing Colorado and Sakic here. I keep reading about this retained salary over and over and over, yet no one has bothered to point out that Barrie is in the last year of his contract or the fact that the Avs swapped a 6th for a 3rd. I’m Canadian. I know how big hockey is here, but let’s all relax and look at this objectively for a second. Barrie has exceptional puck moving skills, but isn’t that great defensively at all. No offence to Barrie, I love the guy. For the most part, under normal circumstances, trading Barrie for a solid second line C, is a fair deal. However Kadri is signed for a few more years at a very reasonable salary, while Barrie is in the final year of his contract and will ask much more next year. At this point in the trade, I’d say Avs are ahead. So they decide to add another player each in the deal with Kerfoot being a little better to even things out. Then the leafs pay for the salary retention by drastically upgrading Colorado’s draft pick. I’m an Avs fan and I voted fair deal. You people need to stop leaving out key aspects to this trade and putting down an excellent GM in Joe Sakic. Furthermore from an Avs perspective, all they were missing was a talented second line C to contend for a cup. That was the biggest priority this offseason. They didn’t need Barrie, nor could they protect him in the upcoming expansion draft. Too many D to protect and not enough forwards. Avs traded what they had too much of, for what the needed most. This was a fair and perfectly logical trade by the Avs. What will leafs fans be saying if Barrie leaves at the end of the year, or if someone else of equal importance has to leave at the end of the year to make room for the Barrie’s salary increase? But no let’s all leave that stuff out and laugh at the Avs. Ridiculous.

I'm a little concerned that Barrie's point production will drop significantly next season assuming Rielly plays #1 PP. Barrie's clearly an offensive specialist and that fact makes this deal a little dubious had it not been for the substantial discount. Also, I think most TOR fans are glad to be rid of Kadri after the last 2 playoff series.

I agree and hope so. With 50% retained and a side of kerfoot I still think the leafs make out very well on this trade. Just the rental on on 50% retained Barrie should be a 1st a prospect and a mediocre roster player.

It's a team thing rather than a league thing. Marner just has to point to Tavares and Matthews. Similar production why not make similar dollars.
.I agree Aho helps lower it but the highest cap on his team is $6M.

Rantannen still likely getting $10M+ so why not Marner

Barrie was a sheltered player in Colorado. 60%+ starts in the Ozone. Not sure Toronto can shelter him. It's not like they are strong behind him. He's clearly not a 1RHD, he's not good in his own zone. Even if they do shelter him, they are in the same position they were before, who is going to play the hard defensive minutes here? Holl, Ceci? Dermott playing on the off side?
My biggest issue with the move is they got smaller. For a team that other teams are already going to push around, they got smaller. Say what you will about Kadri, he wasn't going to put up with no crap. They lost another player like that for two 5'10 guys. Where is the push back on the roster? There is none. I guess seeing teams with no push back get knocked out in the 1st round last year didn't teach TOR anything. TB, gone first round, Penguins gone 1st round, TOR gone, 1st round. The regular season and the playoffs are two different games.

As for the rental, TOR could resign him, at a cost. Their hole defense next year is going to be having issues and people will be getting raises in Muzzen and maybe Berrie. They only have 1 defense man signed next year so that will be interesting.

I think leafs fans will miss him in the long run. During the playoff series with Boston everyone clamoured for a guy with edge and physically punish the Bruins. Leafs got softer in my opinion and will now be looking to add some grit

Anderson needs to play at the same level this year or this team will be in trouble. Today's trades for D boosted the offense, not the defense

True but maybe the plan is to score your way out of trouble? I do think they we need some grit and pushback, but it's needed from some core guys and it's going be hard to go back to the old ways of having a slugger.

I'm wondering if guys like Borgman, Engvall and Marchment get a look. And with Muzzin and Hyman back, we may be fine.

PS, I still think we shoulda taken a flyer on Schenn. He may be young enough to fix!

Not really. They'll probably walk away from Ceci and they can trade Kerfoot for pucks and prospects if need be. Not saying that they will...

This is about the best you get out of a rental tho. People overrate the Worth of Rental contracts. Hall isn't gonna get 2 first 2 A prospects and a B prospect
he will get maybe a mid tier prospect and a 2nd.
